Fun ways to promote the love of reading!
Many of these ideas have come from conferences, PD sessions and collaborations with other librarians.
Student must log 1000 pages read in order to join our JV Readers team, where they will earn a JV Readers pin. Then once they log 2000 pages read they will earn a spot on our Varsity Readers team, where they will earn a Varsity Readers pin AND t-shirt!

"Can You Match the Faculty Member to Their Favorite Book" game, where students need to figure out what books their teachers love! This has lead to a bunch of discussions about teacher personalities and of course BOOKS! So many of the faculty favorites are new to students, so in order to win they need to ask about the books. Or they look up the books on their devices and try to match the book summary with their science teacher or learning specialist.Â
Students in my current school are separated into two teams, green or white. I set up a box for members of each team to submit a book summary slip everytime they finish reading a book. At the end of the year, the team with the most book summary slips wins the title of The Team That Reads. Also I pick a few names from the winning team who earn a bookstore gift card.
BOTB is a fun reading competition where students read from a list of 10 books and answer trivia questions. My current school partners with Baltimore County Public Library (BCPL) to compete against other schools (public and private) in our area.
